Water Pipes
On December 16, 2021, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
announced that the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), would go into effect to support
development of actions to reduce lead in drinking water. The intent of the LCRR is to
identify all lead pipes in communities across the nation. The LCRR compliance date is
October 16, 2024.
All water utilities in the United States must comply with new US EPA rules for lead and copper. One requirement is to locate any lead pipes in the water system both publicly and privately owned. In order to meet this requirement, the City of Fort Oglethorpe Public Utilities Department must utilize various methods including asking the public to assist us in collecting data.
The City of Fort Oglethorpe Public Utilities Department has worked to ensure that no lead is in our distribution system. To verify none is remaining, we must identify the material of all water service lines with in our service area including customer owned. Your service line is the pipe that extends from the water meter to your home or building. Lead solder and lead pipes were banned in the State of Georgia in 1986. Older establishments built prior to 1986, may have private service lines containing materials such as lead, that could affect water quality.
Again, the City of Fort Oglethorpe Public Utilities Department has no records indicating the presence of lead-containing service lines in our system, as well as no history of testing data indicating the presence of lead in our drinking water supply. Water is treated and continuously tested to confirm it meets safe drinking water standards when it leaves the treatment facility and travels through the water mains.
Please determine the size and type of material that your personal service line is made of. Then click below to complete the on-line response form. For assistance, you may call our Public Utilities Service Technician at (423) 421-5046 or the office at (706) 866-0962.
