Homestead Exemption

By taking advantage of the Georgia Homestead Exemption, you can effectively reduce your property tax burden and enjoy greater financial ease in your homeownership journey.

Here is what you need to know and how to apply.

Key Facts:

  • Eligibility: To qualify, you must own and occupy the property as your legal residence as of January 1 of the taxable year.

  • Exemption Amount: The standard exemption provides a $2,000 deduction from the assessed value for county and school taxes.Additional exemptions may be available for seniors, disabled individuals, and other qualifying homeowners.

  • Application Deadline: Submit your homestead exemption application by April 1 to benefit for the current tax year. Late applications will apply to the following year.

How to Apply:

  1. Gather Necessary Documents:
    Valid Georgia driver’s license or state ID. Proof of residency (e.g., vehicle registration)
    First-time homeowners need to bring a copy of their warranty deed.
    Recorded deeds for new owners if county records are not updated.
    Trust document and affidavit, if the property is held in a trust.

  2. Submit Your Application:
    Applications are filed with the Catoosa County Tax Commissioner’s Office at 796 LaFayette Street in Ringgold or the Satelite Office at 205 Forrest Road in Fort Oglethorpe.  You can apply online in Catoosa County HERE. (You will need to search for your property.)

  3. Await Confirmation:
    Once processed, eligible homeowners will see the exemption reflected in their property tax assessments.
    Once approved and applied, homeowners don’t need to reapply unless there is a change in ownership.
